Credit Checks and Credit Bureau Reporting

Types of Credit Inquiries

Soft Credit Check (Soft Pull)

  • Does NOT impact your credit score
  • Used for initial pre-qualification to match you with appropriate lenders
  • May be performed by us, AutoLeader.ca, or our partners
  • Visible only to you on your credit report
  • No hard inquiry notation visible to other lenders

Hard Credit Check (Hard Pull)

  • MAY temporarily impact your credit score (typically 5-10 points)
  • Required by lenders for final financing approval
  • Performed ONLY by lenders you actively choose to work with
  • Visible to other lenders on your credit report for 3-6 months
  • Multiple hard inquiries for auto financing within 14-45 days are typically treated as a single inquiry

Your Authorization

By submitting your application, you authorize:

  1. AutoLeader.ca to perform a soft credit inquiry for matching purposes
  2. Partner lenders to perform soft or hard credit inquiries as needed for approval evaluation
  3. Credit bureaus (Equifax and TransUnion) to provide your credit file to us and our partners
  4. Lenders to verify income, employment, and other information with employers or financial institutions

Multiple Inquiries

When shopping for vehicle financing, multiple credit inquiries within a 14-45 day period (depending on credit scoring model) are typically treated as a single inquiry for scoring purposes. This is normal in the auto financing industry.

Important: Hard credit checks are performed ONLY after you agree to proceed with a specific lender.

Reporting to Credit Bureaus

If you obtain financing through our partners:

  • Your loan activity will be reported to credit bureaus (Equifax and TransUnion)
  • On-time payments can help build positive credit history
  • Late or missed payments will negatively impact your credit score
  • Loan will be visible on your credit report for the duration of the financing term

We recommend reviewing your credit report regularly:

  • Equifax Canada: www.equifax.ca or 1-800-465-7166
  • TransUnion Canada: www.transunion.ca or 1-877-713-3393

You are entitled to one free credit report per year from each bureau.
